How scale works

A scale like 1:24 means one unit on the model stands for 24 of the same unit in real life. So you divide the real measurement by the scale number. A 4.5 metre car (4,500 mm) becomes 187.5 mm at 1:24.

Measuring things you can't look up

When there's no spec sheet, measure from something with a known size. A standard door is about 2 metres tall, a brick is around 21 × 5 cm in the Netherlands, and a 55-gallon drum is roughly 88 cm tall. Scale that, then size everything else around it.

Avoid these mistakes

• Switching units halfway. Pick millimetres for the whole build and stay there.
• Rounding too early. Keep two decimals until you cut. Small errors stack up over a whole wall.
• Mixing scales by accident. 1:24 and 1:25 look interchangeable on the shelf, but a 1:25 car is 4% smaller next to 1:24 figures.
