And get this, the cool cats behind Bambu Lab used to be part of the DJI crew, the big shots in the drone game!
So, I’m stoked to spill the beans about my wild adventure testing the Bambu Lab flagship. Dig it, I’ve been rocking a Dremel 3D printer for a hot minute, and sliding into the X1 world had me pumped to see the game-changer it is. There’s a ton of buzz online, but my lowdown is all about those first impressions and how I’m rocking the printer.
My mission? Printing some groovy Musclecars, man! Picture this: a 1972 Plymouth Fury, just like my own hot rod. I’m gonna use it as my canvas to throw down mods and play with colors. Tune in for updates on that wild project—I’ll be laying it out in future posts, so make sure to stick around.

Ladies & Gentlemen,
let’s talk about the magical moment when the X1 3D printer arrives at your pad.
Picture this: a sweet-sized box, double-boxed and heavily protected like its a gift from another universe, guarding it against any shipping shenanigans. The instructions tell you to use the plastic sides to lift this bad boy out of the box – Stand over it, bend your knees and lift it out. it’s like a dance move from the 70s.
And if you went all out and snagged the combo, the AMS system and accessories are hiding inside, playing a game of hide-and-seek. Peel off that protective plastic like you’re unwrapping a funky gift, and you’ll need to do a little screw-undoing to reveal the hidden treasures.
Alright, party people, now that you’ve stripped away all the cosmic layers of plastic, foam, and cardboard wrapping from the X1 3D printer, we’re just a few steps away from launching this bad boy into printopia. If you’re feeling fancy and want to roll with an external spool holder, now’s the time to make that happen. But hey, I suggest you roll with the AMS without a doubt.
You can select 1 of 4 AMS Slots or the External One.

But it can handle most other filament brands also to be honest!
Alright, 3D gods, the hardware’s locked in, and now it’s time to sync up with the software scene. Flip that switch on the back to bring this 3D beast to life, and dive into the on-screen vibes. The first move? Download the Bambu Slicer app and ride the calibration wave. Don’t flip out if the printer starts shimmying and making noises – that’s just the printer tuning into its own frequencies. It’s all part of the cosmic dance to make sure everything’s dialed in.
Quick tip: Set the stage right! Your printer needs a solid foundation, like a rockband needs a solid stage!
Pop that baby on a stable and level surface for the ultimate printing symphony.
Now, let’s get this software shindig started!
Alright, printing pioneers, you’ve aced the calibration dance, and now you’re just a heartbeat away from diving into the printing groove. Pop the lid on the AMS, unveil the secret sauce by removing those bottom covers.
Inside, you’ll discover desiccant packs, sealed away like treasures – unbox ’em and slide those packs back into position inside of the printer before sealing the covers. These packs are like moisture bodyguards, keeping the AMS air dry for your filament’s comfort.
Now, grab the star of the show – the PLA filament spool. Slot it into position 1 on the AMS, but heed this warning: the support filament is a loner, meant only for supporting structures, not the main act. To load the filament, crank the knob up, slide the end into the hole, and watch the AMS motors kick in.
It’s like a filament fiesta as it dances back and forth, loading up. Once it’s locked and loaded, slam that AMS lid shut and seal the deal with the locks up top.
Boom, baby! Your printer’s strapped in and ready for the printing symphony. Let the creative vibes flow, and let the 3D magic begin!
Tap that folder icon on the screen, and boom! You’re in the treasure trove of pre-loaded prints in the internal memory. The 3DBenchy is the cool cat’s choice, and it zips through the printing scene faster than you can say “pineapple juice.” But hold your horses: before the magic happens, the machine does its thing – calibrating vibrations, checking filament vibes, and inspecting the first layer with Lidar.
It takes a chunk of print time, but once it’s done, brace yourself for a lightning-speed print extravaganza that doesn’t skimp on quality. Talk about mind-blowing, especially compared to my Dremel 3D45.
Dive deeper into the stash, and you’ll find other gems in the internal memory, like scrapers for an easy print breakup from the build plate. No extra fuss needed – just hit print and vibe with the sounds of the printer doing its thing. Now, don’t freak out if it gets noisy with some banging and shaking – it’s all part of the cosmic ballet.
Sit back, relax, and let the 3D show unfold!
Bambu Slicer Software
Awesome! Time to snag the Bambu Studio desktop slicer app, and let me tell ya, it’s a real smooth operator.
User-friendly and as intuitive as a well-played riff, this app connects wirelessly to the printer, snagging deets like filament flavor in the AMS, print status, controls, and more. Slice and dice your usual slicer settings, but here’s where it gets extra cool – you can “paint” parts for multi-color or multi-material action. The UI is a visual feast, easy on the eyes, letting you keep tabs on your print with real-time updates and a live camera feed, just like the mobile app.
Now, here’s the headliner of the Bambu Studio gig – sending prints straight to the printer, no SD card tap dance required. It’s a game-changer and cranks up the joy of printing with the X1. But, if the Bambu Lab cloud server hits a snag, you might hit a bump.
The file hitchhiked to the printer, and I just tapped into it from the screen, hit “start,” and we were back in business. No SD card hassle! Even if the server takes a brief detour, you can still make the magic happen locally with less fuss. Keep the good vibes rollin’!

Multicolor Printing
Hold onto your hats, ’cause here’s the real jaw-dropper – the ability to spin a multicolor masterpiece with the AMS system. Picture this: four different filament spools jiving together, and if you’re feeling extra wild, you can hook up four AMS units for a mind-blowing 16-color extravaganza! The printer takes care of all the color changes and purges like a seasoned pro, leaving me free to set it and forget it until the model strutted its stuff.
But, let’s keep it real – multicolor magic takes time. Depending on the file and the color change count, you might be in for a longer groove. Plus, word to the wise, it generates a bit of waste, popping out at the back of the printer. Now, sure, you could go with the flow and print a waste bin from the plethora of STL files out there, but I went a step further. I downloaded a “poop chute” to guide the waste straight into a trash can, sidestepping any nozzle clogs or print hiccups. Waste not, want not!
And let’s talk about unleashing your inner artist with the Bambu Studio software. It’s like a coloring book for tech heads. While the tools aren’t rocket science, they get the job done, man. You can even check out some YouTube tutorials for the full scoop. So, grab your shades, ’cause this feature is where the real party’s at!

FINAL THOUGHTS
Should You Own One?
Sounds like you’re riding the 3D printing wave with the X1, and it’s all good vibes and creations! Your enthusiasm for its speed, reliability, and effortless multicolor prints is contagious. Living in the future, indeed! The convenience of the Bambu Studio slicer and direct printing from it adds a cherry on top of the simplicity and fun of the 3D printing journey.
Of course, every hero has its Achilles’ heel, and the X1 is no exception. Those false alarms with layer inspection bugs and the printer’s noisy groove can be a minor speed bump, although it happended only once when I tested it. Dealing with the multicolor waste and some hiccups with older filament on plastic spools might be a chore, but hey, you’re rocking printed mods to overcome these obstacles.
Dreaming big is the name of the game, and your desire for a larger build volume echoes the aspirations of many creators. Fingers crossed for that X1 XL in the future – the world is ready for bigger prints!
Despite the minor hitches, it’s clear the X1 has amped up your printing game, turning it into a joyous experience. Keep the updates coming, and happy printing adventures!
